IRS Extends Tax Deadline One More Day Due to Website Crash

Posted by Cailey Taylor on Apr 18, 2018 11:48:13 AM

The IRS apologized for the crash and extended the tax return deadline to help the millions of taxpayers who weren’t able to file their taxes yesterday. The outage affected the “Direct Pay”, a free service for paying taxes using your personal bank account and the “Payment Plan” page which allowed taxpayers to pay their tax bill in installments. The IRS announced that both pages were operational at 5pm on Tuesday after being unavailable for most of the day.

If you don’t want to use the Direct Pay or Payment Plan page, you can also pay via debit or credit card on the IRS website. However, if you choose to pay this way, you will be charged a fee ranging from $2 to $3.95 for debit transactions and expenses. You can also pay what you owe with a paper check.

Today is now the tax deadline for both your 2017 federal tax return and your tax payments. If you need extra time, you can pay the IRS estimated taxes over the phone or online and obtain an automatic extension to file your return.

If you file for an extension, your federal tax return will be due on October 15th. To file an tax return extension, you can submit Form 4868 either electronically or on paper. You must either file this online or postmark it by midnight tonight. It’s important to remember that even if you file for an extension, that only extends the time to file your individual tax return, it does not extend your time to pay. You must make at least an estimated payment of the taxes you owe by midnight tonight or you will face penalties from the IRS.
