IRS Phone Scam Costs Taxpayers Millions: Don't Be a Victim

Posted by Cailey Taylor on Sep 25, 2014 1:00:00 PM

You may have heard in recent months about a common IRS phone scam in which the caller claims to be an IRS agent and demands immediate payment. Unfortunately, this scam has cost taxpayers millions of dollars and is still going strong. As a recent WNDU.com article reports:

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS and demanding immediate payment, hang up immediately. It is most likely a scam.

Here's a common scenario to watch out for: You receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS or U.S. Department of Treasury.

The caller tells you that you owe tax money, due immediately. If it is not paid, the caller threatens, a warrant will be issued for your arrest. You are then told to put the money on a prepaid debit card and give the caller the number.

Don't fall victim to this scam that has cost consumers a total of $5 million nationwide. The IRS will never initiate contact over the phone. You will always be contacted first through official correspondence by mail. Additionally, the IRS will never ask you for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the phone.

If you think you've been targeted by this scam, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040 yourself to confirm it is fraudulent.

The real IRS costs taxpayers plenty of money as it is – so don't give one cent of your hard earned money to these scammers!

Unfortunately, many taxpayers also face very real IRS tax controversies – and resolving those disputes is much more difficult than just hanging up the phone. If you are facing an IRS tax dispute, it's important that you have a tax lawyer on your team. A tax attorney can keep the IRS from harassing you night and day and can force the IRS to "play fair" instead of exploiting the complicated tax code to take advantage of taxpayers who don't have the time to make sense of these ever-changing laws.

If you're facing an IRS controversy, don't face it on your own – please call us at 844-841-9857 to learn more!
